TUHEISEMUKAMA PRAKISEDA
Grade 6 - Age 14
Future Teacher
My father is an abusive alcoholic. We are poor and he spends so much on alcohol we often do not have money for school. I have been chased away from school many times for not having books and pencils. I want to become a teacher so I can advocate for vulnerable children like me.

AHUMUZA TOBIAS
Grade 7 - Age 13
Future Doctor
My mother died of maternal related complications when I was 2. I was raised by my grandmother. I want to become a doctor so I can help stop preventable diseases.

AHURIRA MARTHA
Grade 6 - Age 12
Future Teacher
I am the first girl in my entire extended family to ever reach the 5th grade. I dream of going to college and becoming a teacher so I can advocate for the education of other girls.

ARIHO VICTOR
Grade 6 - Age 11
Future Lawyer
I am from a small village in rural Uganda. I love to go to school even though we have few supplies and often have to sit on the dirt floor and gather around a single textbook. I hope to become a lawyer so I can charge people who do wrong and promote justice.

OWOMUGISHA EVAS
Grade 7 - Age 17
Future Career Goal: Undecided
My family was disrupted by domestic violence. When I was young my mother fled my violent father and left us children with our grandmother. She has been good to us and helped us go to school but we do not have money for the higher tuition for high school. Without tuition, I will soon be asked to drop out, work as a laborer, and get married so my family does not have another mouth to feed.

AYINEMBABAZI SARAH
Grade 4 - Age 12
Future Career Goal: Still Deciding
I am the 2nd of 9 children. Sadly, 3 of my siblings have already died. My mother suffers from severe mental illness and my father is mostly absent in my life. Because we are very poor, we live up on the top of a mountain very far from school. My brother and I walk to school whenever we can afford a day not to work in a field for money/food. As we get older, our tution gets more expensive. We try to work more to raise more money but I fear we will soon be asked to drop out; him to work and me to get married so our family has fewer mouths to feed. I want to finish my education so I can help others in my situation reach a better life.

AKARWANAHO PROSSY
Grade *** - Age 11
Career Goal - Still Deciding
During COVID, my family teetered on the brink of starvation. We could not afford food let alone tuitionMy sister and I dream of returning to school so we can make a better life for ourselves and our family.

MUROORA SAUL
Grade 6 - Age 10
I lost both of my parents to disease when I was just 2 years old and I was sent to live with my grandparents. They were old and sadly died shortly after. I was left homeless for several years until my community found a distant aunt of mine willing to take me in with her other 9 children. Money was tight and the family did not have money for my school fees so I was sent to work raising goats. One day, I followed some children on their way to school. The principal saw me and allowed me to stay. Now I am always among the top ranked in my class. I work hard so I can become a doctor to save lives of people like my parents and advocate for health in my community.

OWOMUGISHA SAMANTHA
Grade 4 - Age 12
My mother was an orphan who could get no one to sponsor her education. So she was forced to drop out and work on nearby plantation farms. She depended on the good will of others until she decided to get married to have more stability at age 16. She also married a poor man and had many children. I am the oldest of 7. I want to get an education so I can break the cycle of poverty and help others be empowered as well.

KYOMUGISHA ANGEL
Grade 6 - Age 13
Future Doctor
I am in the sixth grade right now. Can you believe that I am the first girl in my entire clan to ever get this far in school?!
I am grateful for my education thus far and have high hopes of becoming a doctor in the future.

KEMIGISHA NOVENCE
Age 17
Vocational Training
My mother was wrongfully convicted of murder when a drunk man fell off a hill near our house. She was sentenced to one year in prison, leaving me and my 6 siblings alone with my mentally disabled father. As siblings we worked together to survive until my mother was released. Immediately after that COVID hit. I am too old to finish school now. But I would like to achieve vocational training so I have a way of providing for myself and my family.

NAHABWE LOUIS
Grade 6 - Age 13
Future Doctor
My family struggles to send me and my siblings to school each day. We hardly have enough money to make sure everyone eats regularly. Despite these challenges, I value my education and want to become a doctor so I can help others in the future.

NAHWERA PHIONAH
Grade 4 - Age 12
Future Teacher
My mother was wrongfully convicted of murder when a drunk man fell off a hill near our house. She was sentenced to one year in prison, leaving me and my 6 siblings alone with my mentally disabled father. As siblings we worked together to survive until my mother was released. Immediately after that COVID hit. My older sisters are now too old to return to school. But I can still finish if only I had the resources. If not, I will likely be required to marry to help take the pressure of feeding me off my family. Without an education, I will marry into poverty and be unable to help my family. I want to graduate so I can end this cycle of poverty.

TWESIGOMWE JAVILLA
Grade 7 - Age 15
Future Doctor
I am the oldest of 9 children. Sadly, 3 of my siblings have already died. My mother suffers from severe mental illness and my father is mostly absent in my life. I walk 7 kilometers to school and back every day because I am determined to help support my mother and younger sisters. I am about to finish primary school and will likely be asked to drop out to provide a living for my family unless I can get a sponsor. This is concerning but I am even more concerned for what will happen when my sisters reach my age and are asked to drop out and get married. I want to be a doctor so I can help people with mental illness and prevent childhood heaths.

KICONCO NASAAT
Grade 6 - Age 15
Future Nurse
My father abandoned our family of 6 kids when I was very young. Money is always very tight. We cant afford pencils or paper but I go to school anyways. My teachers ask me why I come to school if I have no materials and I simply reply 'I do not have books. But I cannot stay home because I love to learn."

ENSEKIRIYO ISAAC
Grade 6 - Age 17
Future Engineer
I dropped out of school when my family ran out of money due in large part to my abusive father who spends all of his money on alcohol. I started working manual labor, hauling bricks & sand to construction sites. I saved every shilling I could so I could return to school. The kids often tease me because I am so much older than them. But I am committed to completing my education so I can break this cycle of poverty and rescue my mother and siblings from domestic violence. I will become a man who fights for women and not against them.

TUMUSIGIZE JOAN
Grade 6 - Age 15
Future Teacher
Even though my family has always been very poor, I longed to go to school and thankfully my family was supportive. When I started high school, tuition was expensive so my parents sold our two goats. My father gave me the money from his job as a security guard. My aunt gave me all of her savings she earned as a maid. I convinced my teacher to give me books. And I worked as a subsistence farmer to contribute what I could. With all of our work we were able to afford my first term of high school. So I happily walked 10 km to school and then back in the evening. I worked very hard to continue to save money but now that second semester is starting, my family told me we will not be able to afford it. We have nothing left to sell and have already spent our savings. I want to continue my education and hope to be a teacher in the future so I can help children like me.

ARIHO CLAIRE
Grade 10 - Age 22
Future Nurse
When I was in 10th grade, my family started to be unable to pay my high school tuition. At the same time, I met a man who promised to help pay for my school. He impregnanted me soon after and when he discovered I was pregnant, he ran away. I had to drop out to take care of my child My mother helped and accepted me back home. We both worked in the fields to save money for my school. in 2020 we had finally raised enough money but COVID broke out and we spent all our saving on food to survive. I have a deep desire to finish high school and hope to one day be a nurse so I can guide pregnant women and help women have access to family planning.

IBINGIRA FELEX
Age 24 - University
Future Doctor
My father abandoned my father when I was a small child. My mother was left with 4 children and no way to provide. Thankfully, my uncles provided for my high school education and I graduated with good enough grades to enter medical school but it is too expensive for my family to afford. I want to be a doctor, especially after watching the COVID pandemic. I want to help prevent people from dying of diseases of all kinds.

AKATOORANA CHRISTINE
Age 18
Vocational Training
I am the oldest of 7 children. My family is extremely poor so when I was in the 4th grade, I was asked to drop out and get married so my family did not have to worry about feeding me. Unfortunately, my husband was abusive and after he impregnated me, he beat me and then abandoned me. I have been living back home with my mother and doing my best to raise my child. I want to go to vocational school so I have a better way to provide for my child and siblings.
